SHOP BY POPULAR SCALES

What do the numbers indicate?
The first number, 1, represents the actual real-life object. The number following the colon or forward slash (e.g., 35, 48, 144, etc.), indicates how many times smaller the model is than the real-life object.

How do you read out the scale verbally correctly?

There are various ways to read out the scale verbally, all of which are equally correct and commonly used. For example, with 1:35 (or 1/35), you can say 'one thirty-fifth', 'one to thirty-five', 'one thirty-five', or even simply 'thirty-fifth scale'.

But how long is it?
This is a challenging question to answer when referring to scale, as different vehicles and objects vary in size in real life. For example, an Airbus A380 is far larger than a Boeing 737, and that difference in size will scale down equally.

MORE ABOUT MODEL KITS

Model kits can be enjoyable and fulfilling projects, both for adults and kids alike.
Artists of all levels find that building model kits are a great way to practice their
skills in fine craftsmanship, and once completed, many model kits end up being beautiful works of art.
With a wide range of models from cars, trains and planes to boats, tanks, figurines and more,

Due to the careful attention to detail that goes into these models, they are also popular collector items.

If you're looking for an immersive and rewarding hobby, then building model kits is an excellent choice!

WHAT ARE MODEL KITS?

Model kits are an ideal hobby for those who enjoy assembling and creating. Whether you’re into cars, spacecrafts, warplanes, or even Star Wars™ ships, model kits allow you to recreate your favourite objects in miniature form.

Depending on the complexity of the kit, it can take anywhere from a few hours to many days and weeks to fully assemble a completed model. These assembly projects do require patience and commitment — which are invaluable abilities to have. Other skills model kit building will develop include careful attention to direction, time management, and the application of problem-solving techniques.

ARE MODEL KITS A GOOD HOBBY?

Model kits are an excellent hobby. Finishing a model kit will not only give you a sense of accomplishment, but the process can also help develop your skills in problem-solving and engineering.

Model kits come in a variety of forms, ranging from woodworking to diecast metal, and they are suitable for beginners right up to the experienced hobbyist. If a person enjoys crafting and constructing something tangible with their hands, then a model kit is the way to go.

Plus, gone are the days when you had a limited choice of a few cars or plane models. Hobbyco stocks endless and ever-increasing options, meaning modellers never have to get bored with their project.

If you’re looking for a pastime that combines creativity with engineering-based problem-solving, building model kits is the way to go.

WHAT BRANDS DOES HOBBYCO SELL IN MODEL KITS?

Hobbyco is proud to stock a number of industry-leading brands in the model kit space.

The title of ‘best model kit brand’ often comes down to a battle between Revell and Tamiya. Revell has been an influential presence in the model kit sector for almost 60 years and, over this time, has developed a reputation for crafting high-quality, true-to-the-original plastic kits. Some of our customers' favourite Revell products include the Bismarck Model Set, the B17F Memphis Belle, and the Star Wars™ Empire Strikes Back Slave1.

Tamiya, on the other hand, kick-started its journey in the model kit industry by crafting educational wooden models in the 1940s. Fast forward to today, and their product range includes everything from the Douglas A1H Skyraider USN to the British Tank A34 Comet.

Other model kit brands that Hobbyco stocks include Aoshima, Hasegawa, Italeri, and many more.

HOW DO I GET STARTED WITH MODEL KITS?

If you’ve never built a model kit before, it goes without saying that it’s best to start with something simple. Take this Airfix 1:72 North American Mustang Iv Starter Set, for example. Complete with everything you need to get started on your model kit journey, including paint, a paintbrush, and high-quality poly cement, you can enjoy putting together an accurate replica of one of the most iconic American fighter jets of WWII.

Hobbyco model kits tend to have most of the parts and tools you need included. However, if you’re serious about model kit building, it doesn’t hurt to start building up your collection of tools and accessories to help take your creations to the next level.
